Dataset: Norwegian Election Study 2001

Abstract

The Norwegian Election Research Programme was launched in the middle of the 1950's, under the direction of The Institute for Social Research. Henry Valen and Stein Rokkan were responsible for the programme. The programme cooperated with Norsk Gallup Institute A/S for sample survey data collection in the election studies covering the Storting elections in 1957, 1965, 1969 and 1973. Since 1977 the programme has cooperated with Statistics Norway (SSB) for the data collection for these studies. The election studies are intended to give statistical data for research covering elections and political processes in Norway. Since the start of the Norwegian Election Programme Professor Henry Valen has been the key administrator, but in 1985 Bernt Aardal took over as executive manager.

The 2001 survey was conducted in two parts, one survey before the election and another survey after the elcection, where the same sample was interviewed at both times. The background for this is that one wants to discover more about how the election campaign, and especially the media coverage of it, will affect the voters' preferences and behaviour. This is a merged file consisting of both the survey before and after the elecetion, with all valid units included.

Sampling Procedure

Sample drawn for interview in 2001: 3000 persons

Gross sample, before the election: 2980
Net sample, before the election: 2139

Gross sample, after the election: 2950
Gross sample, after the election: 2052

Please note that this is a merged file consisting of all valid units in the surveys before and after the elecetion. (Includes units who participated in either or both of the surveys) Therefore the number of units is 2341.

The sample is a so-called rotating panel, meaning that half the respondents that were drawn in 2001 were also attempted interviewed in 1997, and that the half that were contacted for the first time in this survey also will be attempted contacted in 2005.

The sample was drawn using Statistics Norway's standard sampling frame for face-to face interviews, which uses random sampling in two stages. The standard sampling frame firstly divides the country into a number of primary sampling areas, which in turn are divided into 109 subpopulations, called strata. The sampling areas are municipalities or aggregates of municipalities. Municipalities with few inhabitants are grouped together with other municipalities to ensure that each sampling area consists of at least 7 per cent of the total number of inhabitants in the stratum the municipality belongs to. All municipalities with more than 30 000 inhabitants and some with 25 000 to 30 000 inhabitants constitute separate strata.
