Dataset: Norwegian Election Study, 2001-2005, panel

Abstract

Statistics Norway (SSB) gathered data for the Survey of the Storting Election 2005 which was carried out on behalf of Institute for Social Research (ISF). The project was financed by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.

The Norwegian Election Study in 2005 is included in the election research program at ISF. This program started in relationship with the Storting-election in 1957 and it has been carried out surveys in relation with all succeeding Storting-elections, except for the election in 1961. The aim of the election survey in 2005 is to carry on analysis for preceding elections, partially to study current tendencies in Norwegian politics and unique features in the Storting-election 2005.

Series Information

The Norwegian Election Research Programme was launched in the middle of the 1950's, under the direction of The Institute for Social Research. Henry Valen and Stein Rokkan were responsible for the programme. The programme co-operated with Norsk Gallup Institute A/S for sample survey data collection in the election studies covering the Storting elections in 1957, 1965, 1969 and 1973. Since 1977 the programme has co-operated with Statistics Norway (SSB) for the data collection for these studies. The election studies are intended to give statistical data for research covering elections and political processes in Norway. Since the start of the Norwegian Election Programme Professor Henry Valen has been the key administrator, but in 1985 Bernt Aardal took over as executive manager.

Sampling Procedure

The sample for the survey consists of 3000 persons. The sample is drawn in accordance with the sampling plan. The population is Norwegian citizens in the age 18-79 years who are eligible to vote in the election this fall. This means that all who are turning 18 years within the end of this calendar year can be drawn to the sample.
The sample is put together in the following way:

Half of the sample is a panel consisting of about 1500 respondents who were also drawn for the Norwegian Election Survey in 2001, both persons who were interviewed and persons who dropped out. These persons constitute the "real panel". In addition, the panel is supplemented with young people in the age 18-23 years and immigrants. These persons constitute the "fake panel", since they did not participate in the 2001 survey.
